چکیده

The heat shock response first attracted the attention of molecular biologists because it offered an attractive experimental system for studying a small set of coordinately controlled genes. Further study showed that the heat shock response was actually an important homeostatic mechanism, enabling the cell to survive a variety of environmental stresses. The fundamental nature of this mechanism is underscored by the fact that the heat shock response is found in all animals, plants, and bacteria. The heat shock response is essentially a single cell response and, even for multicellular organisms, can be studied with homogeneous populations of cultured cells, circumventing the complexities of interactions between different cell types. The many simple experimental systems for studying heat shock are yielding rapid advances in our understanding of the biology of both heat-shocked and normal cells; however, they have left open important questions about the role of heat shock in the complex physiology of multicellular organisms. For example, most animals have several mechanisms for regulating body temperature, ranging from the induction of fever to behavioral modifications. To what extent do changes in body temperature produce physiological effects by inducing the heat shock response at the level of individual cells? Answers to this question, among others, will undoubtedly be important in our understanding of disease. The importance of heat shock has been recognized for some time in the field of cancer therapy where hyperthermia is one component of treatment in many cases. For cancer therapy, the question is how best to overcome the heat shock defense of the cancer cell. To answer these questions will require expertise from a number of fields, including molecular and cell biology, physiology, ontology, and radiation biology. A recent Banbury Workshop, {November 9-13, 1987} organized by William Welch {Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory I and Richard Morimoto (Northwestern University} brought together a group of such specialists for the first time to consider the heat shock response. Several of the major themes that emerged from the Workshop are discussed below.

HDAC Inhibitors and Heat Shock Proteins (Hsps)

Epigenetic alterations, including DNA acetylation, hypermethylation and hypomethylation, and the associated transcriptional changes of the affected genes are central to the evolution and progression of various human cancers, including pancreatic cancer. Cancer-associated epigenetic alterations are attractive therapeutic targets because such epigenetic alterations, unlike genetic changes, are po...

Protective Role of Hypothermia Against Heat Stress in Differentiated and Undifferentiated Human Neural Precursor Cells: A Differential Approach for the Treatment of Traumatic Brain Injury

Introduction: The present study aimed to explore protective mechanisms of hypothermia against mild cold and heat stress on highly proliferative homogeneous human Neural Precursor Cells (NPCs) derived from Subventricular Zone (SVZ) of human fetal brain.  Methods: CD133+ve enriched undifferentiated and differentiated human NPCs were exposed to heat stress at 42°C. Then, Western-blot qua...

Protective effect of crocin on electromagnetic field-induced testicular damage and heat shock protein A2 expression in male BALB/c mice

Objective(s): Exposure to electromagnetic fields (EMF) emitted from mobile phones may cause a deleterious effect on human health and may affect the male reproductive system. Crocin, a carotenoid isolated from Crocus Sativus L. (Saffron), is a phar‌macologically active component of saffron. So, this study was conducted to investigate the protective effect of crocin on t...

The Dynamic and Vibration Response of Composite Cylindrical Shell Under Thermal Shock and Mild Heat Field

In this article, the vibration and dynamic response of an orthotropic composite cylindrical shell under thermal shock loading and thermal field have been investigated. The problem is that the shell is initially located at a first temperature, and some tension caused by a mild heat field is created, then the surface temperature of the cylinder suddenly increases. The partial derivative equations...

The Effect of Heat Shock on Production of Recombinant Human Interferon Alpha 2a (rhIFN α -2a) by Escherichia coli

Recombinant human interferon alpha 2a (rhIFN α -2a) production and cell growth were monitored in a set of genetically modified E. coli strains (MSD1519, MSD1520, MSD 1521, MSD 1522, MSD 1523) producing rhIFN α -2a. The growth was followed at OD 600 nm, changes in cell physiology were detected by pyrolysis mass spectrometry (PyMS) of cell biomass and recombinant protein production was determined...
